FOUR WORKS IN OUR SERIES OF RYTHMIC CLASSICS
"MOONLIGHT SONATA". The first movement of the Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata’ is easily one of the world’s most well known pieces. The famous mysterious, almost haunting melody is dark and whisper like on top of an undulating triplet accompaniment. Featuring the Trumpet and Trombone sections this, with the addition of Percussion and Bass Guitar, is a nice easy sounding arrangement that will enchant your audience. If required, the rhythm section can remain tacit for performances in more sacred settings.
"HAYDN'S TRUMPET CONCERTO". Haydn’s melodic and exuberant ‘Trumpet Concerto’ is always a delight for audiences and performers alike. Here the First Movement has been arranged as a Trumpet Quartet and is a delightful diversion from the traditional setting. You can however use this arrangement as a classical accompaniment to a Solo Trumpet – part available on request - by omitting the Bass Guitar and Drums.
"GOING HOME". This arrangement of an excerpt from Antonin Dvorak’s Largo from the ‘New World Symphony’ is a gentle concert interlude with a touch of sophistication. Fully scored with additional parts for Bass Guitar and Percussion this instantly recognisable melody is fun to play and always popular with audiences.
"NESSUN DORMA". Stylishly arranged with additional parts for Percussion and Bass Guitar this will be a popular addition to any concert. Scored in F major this is also available, on request, in the original key (G major) and is, without the additional rhythm section, a very effective accompaniment to the Solo Tenor. This aria achieved pop status after Luciano Pavarotti's recording of it was used as the theme song of the BBC television coverage of the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. It subsequently reached No.2 on the UK Singles Chart, the highest placing ever by a classical recording.
THREE NEW ARRANGEMENTS BY DENIS BURTON
Joseph Kosma’s 'AUTUMN LEAVES' is a jazz and popular standard recorded by many artists including Nat King Cole and Roger Williams, for whom it was a number one hit. In this arrangement beautifully crafted by Denis Burton, the Trombone soloist has the opportunity to play in ballad, beguine and swing styles with two small cadenzas added for good measure. Included is the less often heard verse and despite the variety and changes this is an easily accessible solo for trombonists everywhere.
The TV series 'THE VICTORIAN KITCHEN GARDEN', presented by Peter Thoday and Harry Dodson, went behind the high redbrick walls of Chilton Foliat in Berkshire to follow the restoration of a traditional kitchen garden. The music, by Paul Reade, was written for and performed for the TV series by Emma Johnson accompanied by a harpist. Three of the five movements from the five-movement suite are included in this setting arranged for Wind Band by Denis Burton. It retains a light; Victorian and rustic feel through its sympathetic scoring and is a delight for all audiences.
'A BRACE FROM THE VALLEYS', dedicated to David B Diggs and the Lehigh University Wind Ensemble, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, was premiered by the Band of the Grenadier Guards in Wales at the Parc and Dare Theatre and in Europe at the World Band Festival in Lucerne. Composed and arranged by Denis Burton the work comprises of two traditional Welsh folk tunes, ‘Hob Y Deri Dando’ and the ‘Blackbird’. This miniature overtures' is full of rhythmic and melodic beauty and charm; reflective of life in the valleys. This is not only highly programmable but a valuable addition to the modern concert band repertoire. Bands of all grades will enjoy performing this latest work from one of Britain's exciting breed, of composers and arrangers.
FREDDIE MERCURY'S
"DON'T STOP ME NOW'‘, recorded in August/September 1978 in Nice, France was the 1979 hit single by Queen, from their 1978 album Jazz reaching #9 in the UK charts. With words and music by Freddie Mercury, the song is based around his piano playing. The lyrics have cosmic imagery describing feelings of power and exhilaration although careful examination reveals numerous metaphorical references. Now available for Concert Band, this classic rock number is a great ‘party livener’ and fun to play. Arranged by Adrian Kingston this works well on the concert platform or outdoors.
