About This Work
‘The Guild of Magic’, composed my Melanie Cole, is inspired by Harry Potter. The music evokes the battle of wills between Neolore, the young apprentice and Thalgoren, the old and worldly wizard. Thalgoren is depicted by the murky, laboured melody featuring Bassoon, Bass Clarinet & Baritone Saxophone. Neolore’s fight with Thalgoren appears in the spirited sections when the time signature jumps around impatiently. Thalgoren wants to teach Neolore all that he knows but Neolore doesn’t want to listen. They argue and fight over their differences. However there is a moment where they find peace and mutual respect for each other in a sweet conversation between Oboe and Clarinet. Ultimately Neolore’s spritely youth strides on forwards towards the end, as Thalgoren’s power over Neolore dies away.
‘The Guild of Magic’ features Bassoon, Bass Clarinet, Baritone Sax and Timpani (instruments that don’t always get the chance to shine). There are also solo’s for Oboe, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone and Trumpet. The time signature changes will keep players on the edge of their seat. A thrilling and magical piece to play!
