About This Work

"Good King Wenceslas" is one of the most popular Christmas carols and tells the story of Good King Wenceslas braving the harsh winter weather to give alms to a poor peasant on the Feast of Stephen - the second day of Christmas, December 26. During the journey, his Page is about to give up the struggle against the cold weather, but is enabled to continue by following the king's footprints, step for step, through the deep snow. This setting by Reginald Jacques is taken from Oxford University Press ‘Carols for Choirs No.1' and has arranged by Geoff Kingston for Concert Band with optional Choir with the approval of his Estate.

This carol is highly programmable and it is suggested that the conductor invites the gentleman to take the part of the King and the ladies the Page thus bring some audience participation to the concert; always guaranteed to bring a little Christmas spirit to the event.
