About This Work

One of John Rutter's earliest and still best-loved pieces is a 1966 setting of the traditional text the ‘Shepherd's Pipe Carol'. It tells the story of a happy little shepherd boy who is dancing and playing on his way to Bethlehem to greet the Holy Child. With its simple melody and upbeat syncopations it is a perfect piece for Christmas concerts.

The ‘Shepherd's Pipe Carol' exists in versions for choir and organ or piano as well as a full orchestral setting. With the permission of the composer Geoff Kingston has produced an instrumental version for full concert band which retains all the charm of the original setting. Although scored as an instrumental item it can be performed with choir if present.
