About This Work

"The Jasmine Flower" or "Mo Li Hua" is a traditional and very popular Chinese Song dating from the 18th century. In time, many regional variations were created, and the song gained popularity both in China and further afield; being used during events such as the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics, the 2010 Shanghai Expo and more controversially during the 2011 Chinese protests. The song became one of the first Chinese folk songs to become widely known outside China.

In 1896 the song was used as a temporary national anthem by the Qing Chinese officials in Europe and the melody has become well known by Western listeners as it was included by Giacomo Puccini in his opera "Turandot" in 1926, where it is associated with 'Turandot's splendour'. It also appeared in a 1934 Hollywood movie "The Good Earth" and has adapted by many artists around the world including Kenny G.

This is a beautiful and well thought out arrangement for Concert Band by Keith Terrett and one that so will delight your audiences with its simplicity and charm.
