About this work

Auld Lang Syne" is a Scots poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 and set to the tune of a traditional folk song. It is well known in many English-speaking (and other) countries and is often sung to celebrate the start of the New Year at the stroke of midnight. The song's title may be translated into English literally as "old long since", or more idiomatically, "long, long ago", "days gone by" or "old times".

In the English speaking world Auld Lang Syne is very widely used to symbolise other "endings/new beginnings" including - amongst many others - farewells, funerals and graduations. In non-English speaking countries the melody has often been used with words that aim to convey a similar meaning.

This new setting by Calum Gray works well in the concert hall or on the parade ground with the Trumpet and Trombones performing flourishes to bring the piece to a rousing conclusion.
