"Cat's Fugue - Fugue in G minor - K30" - is a one movement sonata for Harpsichord by Domenico Scarlatti. The nickname, which was not introduced until early in the 19th century and never used by the composer, originates from a story of how Scarlatti came up with the strikingly unusual motif upon which the fugue is built. Legend has it that Scarlatti had a pet cat called ‘Pulcinella', who was described by the composer to enjoy walking across the keyboard, always curious about its sounds. On one occasion, according to the story, Scarlatti wrote down a phrase from one of these "improvisation sessions", and used it as a lead motif in this fugue.
This sophisticated fugue has been innovatively arranged in F minor by Ray Thompson for Brass Quintet. The complex structure of the fugue has been fully realized and gives an opportunity for all members of the group to participate its delightful twists and turns. A great score by Ray and one that is ideal for amateur and professional ensembles.
