'Baritune', composed and arranged by Roger Cawkwell, features the Eb Baritone Saxophone, which in Jazz pieces is often left with a bass riff whilst the remainder of the section disport themselves above. Although the piece is in Jazz style, there is no improvisation, all parts being written out. The first chorus (a 14 bar blues theme) belongs almost entirely to the Baritone Saxophone whilst the second is shared around the ensemble. Take care to observe the pp subito without losing tempo. Following loud and soft ensemble passages the Baritone has some solo breaks leading back into the theme and has the last word, which the player could justifiably milk.
A lively and beautifully crafted piece that is fun to perform and a great addition to the repertoire
