‘For Our Tomorrows’, composed and arranged by Michael Walters is intended for use in celebration and commemorative concerts and event and utilises the traditional ternary structure of the Slow March within a more contemporary harmonic framework.
A short fanfare style introduction alludes to the contemplative melodic material at letter A. The second section at letter B is a stark contrast to the pensive first. A vociferous tenor and bass melody combines with a legato accompaniment in the woodwind and a fanfare style horn and cornet line. The section at letter C sees a return of the first melody, now in the key of C major, juxtaposed with a strident countersubject in the horn and euphonium sections. As with the introduction, a short coda features melodic fragments taken from his ‘sister’ march ‘For Right and Liberty’, (Due to be published shortly) again utilising Lydian harmonies.
For Our Tomorrows and For Right and Liberty are not only linked by an overall sense of commemorative occasion, but also by themes, motifs and harmonies. Ideally, they should be performed together as components of a Beating Retreat or Ceremonial Marching Display but can be performed independently on the concert platform or at other commemorative events.
