"The Music Makers", composed and arranged by Ian Mitchell, came into being through a competition instigated by the Directorate, Corps of Army Music in 2010. The results of the competition were announced in January 2011, and the first performance will take place on 20th July 2011 at Kneller Hall. The timing of the announcement of the results was important to the composer as he had retired from the Army about a month before hand - this being an achievement of which he is extremely proud.
The march is traditional in structure, with slight variance in the repeated sections. The first section uses a rhythmic idiom based upon vocal pronunciation of the organisation for whom the march was written, and various other devices are hidden within the fabric of the music.
