Ian Mitchell's 'Callithumpian Concert’ is an overture based upon a generic type of concert typical of the 19th century where people attended purely to ridicule the performers – often throwing tomatoes and fruit at the band or orchestra!
As the winning entry for the Student Bandmasters ‘Original Composition Prize’ at the Royal Military School of Music in 2000, this sparkling and richly textured overture musically describes the atmosphere a Callithumpian Concert and a perfect opening for any concert. Scampering woodwinds, brilliant brass flourishes and flowing melodies fill the work with the sort of vigor and energy so characteristic of Ian Mitchell’s compositions.
The Callithumpian was first noted in America in 1836 and it is possible that it may have its origin in a southern English dialect word gallithumpian; the English Dialect Dictionary says this could refer to a heckler or someone who disturbs order at Parliamentary elections.
