About This Work

Kevin Riley's ‘Trombone Concerto No.1 in Bb Major’ was written for Michael Buchanan, an outstanding student studying at Wells Cathedral Music School gaining a scholarship to the National Youth Orchestra on trombone at the age of 11!

The ‘Concerto in Bb’ was originally composed as two pieces for trombone and piano - these being the second and third movements. He added the first movement, scored it for orchestra and presented it to Michael as a farewell gift when he left Thorngrove School. The wind band arrangement was commissioned by SafeMusic Publishing Limited, adding to their ever growing and exciting catalogue.

The opening movement requires soloist and band to create music that is always moving forward. Lots of staccato playing throughout, this must never be relaxed.

In the second movement a more legato style of playing from the soloist. This is contrasted with some detached playing from the ensemble giving the effect of pizzicato strings in the opening. The semi quavers should never be rushed giving flowing feeling moving underneath the soloist.

In the third movement, a broad fanfare begins to herald the sound of something exciting coming up!
Agility from the trombone throughout this movement. Kevin chose D major as he feels this is an underused key for the trombone and it gives the soloist a chance to use what he considers to be a very bright register.

Kevin hopes that you enjoy performing this important addition to the Trombone repertoire.
