ABOUT THIS WORK  The title for the Regimental Slow March “Stand Firm and Strike Hard” is taken from the regimental motto of the Mercian Regiment. The regiment was formed on the 1st September 2007 and saw the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment, The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment (29th/45th Foot) and The Staffordshire Regiment amalgamate into the British Army’s newest infantry regiment.

The slow march was commissioned for the formation of the regiment and the composer, Evin Frost, currently the Bandmaster of the Band of the Prince of Wales’s Division, has represented both the newness of the regiment as well as the history of the regiments from which it was formed. As a result, the march is in three sections with the first section based upon newly composed material that is in itself based upon 21st Century popular music harmony. The second section is more traditional and uses excerpts from the previous regiments’ slow marches and bugle calls, as points of reference, in order to respect the lineage of three proud and historic regiments. The third section is a direct repeat of the first in order to create a natural A-B-A structure.

The composer has aimed to produce a work that is suitable for the parade square and the concert hall so that audiences may enjoy listening while soldiers of the Mercian Regiment may march with pride and recall their regiment’s motto to “Stand Firm and Strike Hard”.
