| ABOUT THIS WORK | Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) was one of Germany’s leading composers, and a prolific composer of Church Music, Chamber Music, as well as music for the Organ and other Keyboard instruments. Although most famous for his glorious Canon in D his Seven Chorale Variations on the secular work ‘Alle Menschen Mussen Sterben’, a liturgical hymn is a worthy alternative. After the opening 'Chorale', you will hear a set variations of varying complexity which often feature contrapuntal devices. Variation six has a 'Jazzy' sound to its harmony, which is interesting when you consider when the composer wrote this work. Arranged by Keith Terrett this offers Brass Quintets a challenging and demanding piece to add to their repertoire and one that is well worth the effort! |
