| ABOUT THIS WORK | For many, William Rimmer is The March King of Brass Bands. His marches are wonderful pieces, every one with its own unique personality. None has the routine formality, the writing to a formula, which we find in the works of other pretenders to the title. They included the brilliant Cossack - written for Fodens and faithfully preserved by them to this day - and Slaidburn, equally famous for its tuneful simplicity. Others equally fine, included Ravenswood and the classic British Brass Band contest march Punchinello. This arrangement, by Denis Burton, introduces new lines rather than a relocation of the brass band parts with trills and counterpoint providing appropriate use of the woodwind textures against the brass. It was used as the quick band troop by the massed bands of the Foot Guards during the Queens Birthday Parade in June 2004. Punchinello is the short fat buffoon or clown in an Italian puppet show. His main characteristic, from which he acquired his name, is his extremely long nose, which resembles a beak. |
