| About This Work: |
‘A European Christmas’ is a medley of Christmas carols, arranged by Philip Andrews, featuring traditional songs from England, France and the Czech Republic. After an introductory few bars of the ’Sussex Carol’ the medley gets underway with the old English song of ‘I Saw Three Ships’ leading into the lovely old French melody, featuring a Solo Flute, ‘A Maiden Most Gentle’. The music then becomes slower and more tender with the winsome Czech carol of ‘Rocking.’ Then it is back to an old English traditional carol once more with a lively and rhythmic rendition of ‘Here We Go A-Wassailing’. Within the medley, there are short quotations from ‘Good King Wenceslas’ - again of Czech origins, and the ‘First Noel’ - 18th century English - before the music reaches a loud and exciting conclusion. This is great medley featuring some wonderful but lesser used carols. Well scored, this is ideal for bands of all grades and very tuneful addition to the Christmas repertoire. | |
