About This Work: “Angelus ad Virginem” (Gabriel to Mary Came) is a 14th century English setting, though possibly originating in France or Ireland. The music is a good example of how the simplest of little tunes can prove very effective.

In this arrangement by Philip Andrews, the opening is of a very gentle and calm nature, with the lilting melody being firmly established. It gradually builds until the whole band joins in on the second verse, where the music becomes more festive in spirit. There is a tender poignancy to the following section, which then leads to a quiet and peaceful ending.

This piece will be a welcome addition to a band’s Christmas repertoire, and likely to be a popular programme choice.
