| About This Work: |
‘Owl Rag’ is the first of two ragtime works for concert band, composed and arranged Keith Otis Edwards, to added to the 2009 SafeMusic catalogue - the second being Baal-Moloch. With its infectious, foot-tapping, ragtime rhythm, sectional features and a few additional sound effects this will give your concert a lift and provide your audience with some real, exuberant, entertainment. The middle section of the piece is a ‘Cakewalk’, which was a dance with a strutting motion that was popular near the end of the nineteenth century. It was derived from an African-American contest of graceful walking and posturing with a cake as a prize. This is also the origin of the common expression, "That takes the cake!" Owls are fond of beer, especially dark beer. Occasionally, at breweries, an owl will sample too much and fall into the vat. When this happens, the beer is considered to have magical properties and is sold secretly to a select clientele around the world. Owls are also great dancers. Late at night, this music can sometimes be heard coming from treetops and tall buildings. It is interesting to note that the first wind instruments were all crafted to mimic the sound of owls. In Germany today, wind instruments are still referred to as Eulengehooteren. | |
