Stephen Foster, known as the "Father of American music" was the pre-eminent songwriter in the United States of America of the 19th century. His music became a legend in his lifetime and despite him earning virtually nothing from royalties, remain popular over 150 years after their composition
In this, the second selection of music by Stephen Foster, Roger Cawkwell features “Beautiful Dreamer”, a more subdued, though haunting song, using gentle duple time accompaniment to the triplet feel of the original song. Perhaps here Foster is dreaming of the love he never experienced? This is followed with a lively version of “Oh, Suzannah!” featuring a variety of cross rhythms; evoking the spirit of the age.
