Arranged for Saxophone Quintet by Roger Cawkwell, 'English Folk Songs', is a suite of three contrasting movements very much in the tradition of Gustav Holst, Vaughan Williams and Percy Grainger. Elegantly scored, and exploiting the full palette of tonal colours available from the Saxophone, Roger captures the very essence of the English countryside.
1. “Turpin, Hero” is a much performed and varied witty song detailing the exploits of the wily highwayman Dick Turpin.
2. “Died For Love” is a tragic lament by a despairing unwed mother who wishes only for death after she gives birth.
3.“The Cutty Wren” is a very old song usually associated with the Peasants’ Revolt but whether it was really sung at that time is unclear. Its melody is virtually identical to “Green Bushes” and “The Lost Lady Found”.
