‘The Gondoliers’ was the twelfth opera written together by Gilbert and Sullivan and opened on December 7, 1889 at the Savoy Theatre, Running for 554 performances, this was the last of the G&S operas that would achieve wide popularity. Its lilting score has, perhaps, the most sparkling and tuneful music of them all and calls, perhaps, for the most dancing. One of the most infectious melodies is that of the ‘Cachucha’ a lively Andalusian dance in 3/4 (3/8) time for a solo dancer with castanets.
Arranged by Denis Burton, in his inimitable style, this vivacious dance is available for Brass Quintet and will certainly be enjoyed by audiences and performers alike.
