Although the ‘Keel Row’, or to give it its full title “Weel May The Keel Row”, has long been associated with Newcastle and Tyneside it was first printed in Edinburgh about 1770 in 'A Collection of Favourite Scots Tunes'. The word "keel" is from an Anglo-Saxon derivation meaning ship, but on the Tyne and Wear it was applied to a clumsy great oval, flat-bottomed boat used for carrying twenty tons of coal at a time. The boat was steered by two men known as "keel bullies". Who were famous for their hard lives, drinking and knocking their wives around.
Arranged for Brass Band by Lee Morris this famous tune captures both its early origins and the hustle and bustle of the Tyneside dockyard with one or two references to other tunes from the area. A short, snappy score, which makes a great encore or concert livener.
