‘Quintet for Brass No 2’, composed by Kevin Riley for the staff quintet at the Newbury Music Centre, was used primarily as a demonstration piece for students.
The Quintet follows the standard fast slow fast formulae of three movements; the first movement is quite straightforward with themes on the 2nd Trumpet, Horn and Trombone and the second is a vehicle for the Tuba to show his expressive side!
In the third movement, excitement prevails with its prevailing 5/4 time signature. Interplay here between the Horn, Trombone and Tuba will hold the piece together. The theme begins as a trumpet duet then moves to the horn. This work is ideal for embryonic and more advanced ensembles and a delight to perform
