“Adagio in Swing” is based on the famous ‘Adagio in G minor’ by Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni.
Arranged for Oboe and Big Band for the Concert Big Band of Almaty, Kazakhstan, Dmitry Varelas decided to transform this Adagio into something new, using the style of slow jazz and blues to create the atmosphere of the jazz concert whilst retaining the stateliness and loftiness of Albinoni’s original music. He chose the Oboe as the soloist in contrast to the Big Band sound as a juxtaposition between a symbol of the Baroque era and the Concert Big Band; one of the symbols of modern jazz.
This is a new and exciting solo for Oboe based upon a well-known and much loved melody. Orchestrated for Concert Band by Geoff Kingston is a valuable addition to the concert band repertoire and one that will enthral your audience.
It is most commonly orchestrated for string ensemble and organ, or string ensemble alone.
